Unity Tutorial 04

Image
In this blog I will discuss Reading weeks tutorials. This week I finished off last weeks tutorials, so this week I did tutorials 2.4 and the second challenge.  This week was less stressful than the first challenge week that's for sure. First off I finished both parts of it compared to the last time where I basically failed the challenge.  So the first part was tutorial just finishing up what we started last week. I found this really easy and just followed along with the video's and pausing when I needed to. This tutorial consisted on making a new method to spawn the animals randomly in the game. Then adding in a timer to spawn them at different time intervals.  then added a collider and trigger components, then I added code to destroy the pizza and animals when they collided. Finally I added the game over message. Then I moved on to the challenge which if I'm being completely honest I found fairly difficult. I had a bit of trouble opening it so that wasn't a great start

Game Vision Statement

Image
For this blog I will be sharing my Game Vision Statement, I am extremely excited to create and see how this game will develop. What is Escape The Maze?  Escape the Maze is a game to challenge your mind! How will Escape the Maze be played?  Escape the Maze will be a game where the player will maneuver through a maze full of puzzles. by completing the correct puzzles they will let the players get closer to freedom. The player will be able to move forward,   left and right on completing a puzzle when choosing a puzzle they will be able to move forward , backward , left and right . You will be greeted by a sign explaining the rule, for example if you choose the wrong puzzle or fail a puzzle you timer to get out of the room will decrease. This is to challenge the player as they will have to learn from their failures on how to solve the puzzles. The timer will add a sense of making urgent decisions that depending on how many puzzles you have failed or completed either subtract or add to your

Unity Toutorial 03

I have just completed  this weeks Unity tutorials, which are Lessons 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3. I found these tasks very enjoyable and challenging as there were a few part I had to watch back a few times to figure out where I was going wrong.  This week the tutorial was based around a animals and pizza. Yes you read that correctly. It basically consisted of three animals, a farmer and pizza. The main objective of the game is to feed the animals food to stop them. You would generate the pizza by pressing down the space bar and use the S key to spawn animals randomly around game. This is an area I found a tad confusing. So we had to use animal prefabs and place them in the spawn manager. This came easy however when righting the code for the spawn manager I misspelled several key phrases and cause the game to not operate correctly. After comparing my code to the code in the tutorial I realized I had added letter and was missing some letters as well. (Thanks Dyslexia.). I was actually really happy

Feedback Strategies

Image
First I read the article that I read was "Be a Mirror: Give Readers Feedback That Fosters a Growth Mindset" by Gravity Goldberg -  https://literacyworldwide.org/blog/literacy-now/2015/12/08/be-a-mirror-give-readers-feedback-that-fosters-a-growth-mindset I decided I would read this article because the title caught my eye. I was also curious about what the author meant by being a mirror. I find giving feedback to people just as hard as receiving if not more difficult as I know what it's like to be in their shoes. This article however has given me a lot to think about. The author give five qualities you should have in your feed back. those being as followed.  1. Be specific.  2. Focus on what the person your giving feedback to is doing ( not what is missing). 3.Focus on the process and the work put in.  4.Make sure it can transfer. 5. Take yourself out of the feedback.  These tips are defiantly very good and can be used for al forms of feedback. Especially the last one that

Game Idea Research

Image
The game idea I have chosen to continue through out the rest of the semester is my puzzle themed game. Going off the feedback that Shaun has given me and my own research I have done I believe this is the best course of action. Firstly it was my most thought out game idea and one I am most interested in making. This blog will be about researching this game idea further and think of how I can make this game possible in Unity. I used some YouTube videos to start my research those being  Breaking Down Video Game Mechanics ,  Top 10 Puzzle Games . I also found some Unity tutorials that could be use full when it comes time to actually creating this game I will link them here:  Creating a Puzzle Platformer in Unity | Prototype Series ,  Make First Level in Unity - GameDev from Beginner to Pro - 3D Puzzle Game .  My concept for anyone who hasn't read my previous post on this subject I will briefly explain what my game idea is. My game will be a puzzle game set in a labyrinth style prison,

Unity Tutorial 02

Image
Hey there this is my blog post on Unity Tutorial 02.  To begin I started with lesson 1.4 which was the lasts part of last week's project which was the car game. I really enjoyed getting to finish this game. I found that I flew through this as I did these tasks. This was an amazing start to the tutorial and as I went through it everything was working out perfect bare one or two minor problems which were quickly fixed. The code is where I made a few mistakes but after examining them for a few minutes it was fixed. I finished this task thinking " wow that was fun and easy huh!". Famous last words. So then I began Challenge 1 & Quiz Plane Programming and well I began to realize this was going to be difficult. I started and I soon noticed there wouldn't be step by step instructions. I had so much difficulty with this to the point I didn't complete this task for a number of reasons the main one being my time management being affected by outside circumstances. I howe

Game Elements ~ Reading Week 4

Image
What are the Qualities of Games? After completing my reading of What are the Qualities of Games? by Ian Schreiber it is clear that he raises some very important questions on what qualities make up a game. Those points being that all games are made up of some   basic atoms, The process of critically analyzing a game in three simple steps and some questions to ask yourself while critically analyzing a game. The author speaks about how there are some key elements that make a game. He states these may differ depending on who you ask, there are also many different "schemes of classification" of what a game is but none of these are perfect but all have running themes that are all found between them all. These "atoms" as the author refers to them are as followed, Player, Objective/ goal, rules, resources and resource management, game state, information, sequencing, player interaction, theme and finally games as systems.  The author of the article then goes on to say how to

Feedback Thoughts

Image
Feedback!!! Feedback yeah never really liked it if I'm being honest. I just always felt it to be something to be feared. I guess that came from my siblings picking on everything I did. I also think that it stemmed from school where if your answer wasn't right then you were wrong and at least I felt I should be ashamed of that. So I quickly learned not to try unless I knew the answer was 100% correct. I also had another thing holding me back that probably made me fear feedback and that was epilepsy I have spoken about my epilepsy on here briefly before, but I remember doctors saying they were going to "fix" me or figure out what was "wrong" with me with that tired yet sincere smile doctors have. To a 7 year old being told they were gonna fix me or that something was wrong with me didn't really phase me or at least I didn't think it would, but after a few years especially after I was re-diagnosed I realized I would often tell myself I needed to be fi

Game Brainstorm

Puzzle Game! My idea for a Puzzle game is a game in which the player is trapped in a labyrinth like prison. They have to solve a series of puzzles to gain there freedom. However they will be given a choice of multiple puzzles to solve one letting them move forward and the rest ending the playing experience. This game would require the player to fail to learn and move forward, obviously they could be lucky and never fail but that is unlikely. Puzzle games usually help strengthen peoples thought process so that would be the aim of this game. When it comes to creating a game like this, I have very little knowledge of how to do that YET!!!  If we are talking knowledge of these kind of games, I have a good bit I have always played puzzle-based games. Some games which I have played that have puzzle elements are Little Nightmares and Life is Strange both incorporating puzzles into  themselves very differently. I'm interested in these sorts of games because they usually have a very deep m

Unity Tutorial 01

I've just completed the Unity tutorials 1.1, 1.2, 1.3. I found these enjoyable with a dash of difficulty. what I mean by that statement is I found the tutorials really enjoyable however there where elements that I found difficult such as getting the ridgedbody to work. The video tutorials where really helpful for me as when I'm given a long video with instructions, I find very little of the middle content goes in or takes a long period of time to process. The short videos definitely helped me in that aspect and after I felt like I had learned quite a lot when each section was finished.   I found that the guy in the tutorials went at a relatively good pace. However at times I felt that it he would go on tangents so I set the video to 2x the speed so I could stay focused on task. Normally I wouldn't use this feature however as someone who has issues with focusing because of many outside factors this seemed to work for me. The written instructions were also a nice touch as it

Game Design

What is a Game Anyway?  After completing a reading of  What is a game anyway? by Ian Schreiber, it is evident that several points where raised by the author of the paper. These points include the lack of a universal definition of what a game is, the weakness of definition and how simple making a game really is. The following blog will address these points in greater detail.  To begin with the author explains what his definition of what a game is, it being "a play activity with rules that involves conflict" direct quote What is a Game Anyway? by Ian Schreiber. He then goes on to states even though his definition was adopted by the IDGA Education SIG there are still many different definitions out there some of which disagree with his. He then brings up a point of how some games are the same concept but are executed slightly differently, they are different because of different rules and names. The example he used was that of Three to Fifteen compared to Tic-Tac-Toe. He also st

Tech Tips: Twitter Widget

Hey there so I have added a a twitter widget to my blog so any visitors to my blog can keep up to date with my twitter going forward. I chose my twitter as it would help people who maybe don't follow my twitter in the class to find my account when they are commenting on my blogs later down the line.  That's all folks!!! My introduction to Time Management

Image
The articles I read for this assignment were: Four questions to help you overcome procrastination by Peter Banerjea, 3 steps to recapture time by Joynicole Martinez. Were the articles useful? I found both articles to be very helpful. However I found the first article "Four questions" to be a lot more helpful than the second one was. In this article it gave a lot of useful tips on how to deal with procrastination. I like how it gives you four very simple questions to ask yourself which can help deal with being in a mental block and procrastinating one's work. It recommends you break up your bigger tasks that may be causing you to procrastinating by breaking it up into smaller tasks and starting on the smallest and just focusing on that task.  The second article was helpful but not as much as the first one in my opinion. One thing I did take from this article was that the first 15 minutes of your day should be blocked off to meditate and figure out how your gonna deal wi

Introduction to Technology Tools and Course Website

Image
Are you already familiar with some of these technology tools? I'm familiar with blogger from last year when making blogs for multiple of my subjects. I feel very comfortable and, in my abilities to use it to make a well-designed blog for many people to view. I have used bookmarking for several years now and always use it for sites from academic purposes and non-academic purposes. It is one of my favorite tools as I'm always accidentally closing tabs to only realize I need them again. I use Pinterest on a very regular basis I use it for changing up my space to getting design ideas. I feel confident in my abilities with Pinterest as I've been using it since 2016. I have used image editing software as well, I've also used Canvas but I'm not as confident with using Canvas and hope to improve my skills with that.   How is the online environment like/ unlike you have experienced in other classes? I like the online environment that this class gives off just like welcomin

More about class assignments

Image
What assignments are you most intrigued by? I have just finished reading through the class assignments I do like the 5 core assignment and think they are well balanced and appeal to me all equally. The one of these 5 that sticks out most to me is the reading and blog commenting and Unity3D. I'm looking forward to learn how to use Unity to create a game and experiment with it. I am really looking forward to looking at other peoples blogs to see there views on topics that where studying and also am excited to comment on other peoples blogs and have people comment on my blog giving me feedback. How is this like/unlike what you have done in other classes? This is a very different grading system from my other classes, but I like that because if I want a B I can achieve that and be done which will let me spend more time on other classes. I like the layout because for me I like to have plans, for my plans so I get to make how I'm gonna organize my workload during week so that I don

Growth Mindset

Image
This was my first-time hearing Carol Dweck. I found her insights into mindsets both fixed and growth very intriguing. I watched a few of her videos and found her process of studying the mindsets quite strange at first but after a couple of videos I started to see the genius behind the madness so to speak.  Focusing on Brain Research at Stanford: Mindsets video for me it confirmed a few things I already knew that all people as children, babies to be more specific are born with a growth mindset but as they grow up for some it's changed by the lessons they learn and there environments. It also confirmed that some people grow up believing that intelligence is fixed and that you can't gain more but on the other side of that some people believe that its something that you can work on and grow like a muscle, which its proven to be.  I learnt that fixed and growth mindsets are developed in the first couple of years of someone's life usually in the first few years of school and at
